Reflections on Why How and What Ted Talk Video

I just watched the following Ted Video, which BTW is well worth watching.  I then reflected a bit about how I operate, my motivations and for all intents and purposes my Big Why…  Reflections after Video…

Ultimately since 1977 I have marched to a different drum… Ironically for me it also started with Apple.  It was 1977 when I was first exposed to Apple and that winter my father bought an Apple ][ with a plus card and 64K of Ram…  With accessories like 2 5 1/4″ floppy drives, a Green Phosphorous monitor and a 9 pin dot matrix printer the bill was approximately $7000 Canadian…  However I was hooked…

Fast forward to the fall of 2010…  I now run a tech based real estate company surrounded by iPhones, an iPad, a bunch of powerful computers and my office is literally a 3D Virtual Office environment and it begs the question…  Why do I do what I do?  Is it for money?  Hardly…  I think its more about a desire to be on the front of a trends.  So this brings up the “Big Why?”

I think my “Big Why?” really has to do with bringing about a better future using technology.  I have always dreamed about what the future would look like: Cars that drive themselves; Going to an office which only exists in Virtual Space; Paperless Office; Environmental Conservation [via technology], etc…  Of course the difference is that my more recent goal has been to do what everyone envisions for the future but doing it today.

I was first exposed to the idea of a total virtual office when I was first exposed to the financial company First Virtual back in 1994 – 95.  What was intriguing at the time was that (as I remember it) First Virtual had no physical office.  The entire team worked remotely (home or on the road) via their laptops, desktops, conference calls etc…  The technology that we have access to today in terms of full on Virtual Environments didn’t exist in a significantly usable format back then however I imagine that the team was imagining a future where their office was fully immersive.

Ultimately it seems that there needs to be a bit of a shift from What we do, to Why we do it?  It reminds me of the phrase… “No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

My “Big Why” really does comes from a feeling, a gut instinct that we are doing something meaningful.  We are working on changing the world through the use of technology.  Some of it is driven by timing.  Timing as it relates to the economy and the current demise of traditional (Bricks and Mortar) ways of doing business, which quite frankly isn’t working and won’t work with the current velocity of transactions and declining property values.

So…  If you are looking for a Big Why…  It’s this: We are bringing the future back to the present in a meaningful way.  We are taking advantage of the current trends in technology; being early adopters and innovators in order to be the positive change in the present providing those who participate more and better opportunities then tends to be present in the current marketplace…

Well I might need to work on the Big Why a bit more…  However you get the picture (hopefully)…
